Netflix has revealed the first official images for Ray Gunna new animated film from the award-winning director behind beloved Pixar films The Incredibles and Ratatouille.
Billed as a gumshoe sci-fi adventure, Ray Gunn is the first film from Oscar winner Brad Bird in eight years – the last big-screen offering he co-directed was The Incredibles 2which made its theatrical debut in mid-2018.
Ahead of Bird’s latest film premiering exclusively on the world’s top streaming service later this year, Netflix has released some world-first images from the upcoming film, and the first details about its plot and A-list voice cast. Let’s start with the aforementioned images, which you can see in the gallery below:

Historically, Ray Gunn takes place in 1939, in an alternate universe city called Metropia. According to Netflix, it will see “private eye Raymond Gunn [get] drawn into a case involving aliens, murder and a multimedia star named Venus Nova”.
“Ray Gunn has been in my mind for over 30 years,” said Bird in a statement accompanying the announcement of one of this year’s new films. “The film is a mix of sci-fi and classic detective films from the 40s – it is Maltese Falcon meetings Buck Rogers. I’ve been a fan of both those kinds of genres, and mixing them together seemed fun and a chance to play with a lot of very cinematic elements and extreme characters.
“There’s a huge chunk of people who don’t watch animation. That’s a group I’m keen to persuade [to watch this]because it’s a great art form that’s way too limited in people’s minds. Animation as a medium is too interesting to limit what kind of stories can be told.”
Who is part of Ray Gunn’s cast?

In addition to all the aforementioned revelations, Netflix has also confirmed the first three actors who will lend their vocal talents to some of Ray Gunn‘s main characters.
For starters, Marvel alum Scarlett Johansson is on board as the voice of Nova, one of Metropia’s megastars and likely the film’s femme fatale-like character.
“Having the opportunity to collaborate with Brad Bird is a career milestone for me,” said Johansson. “I’ve loved his work all my life. This project is so uniquely special because it’s a total realization of where Brad is currently in his artistic journey. I can’t wait for audiences to see this extraordinary animation that’s unlike anything else out there.”
joins Jurassic World: Rebirth and Lost in translation actor listed is Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2, The Bad Guys) and Tom Waits (Seven psychopaths, Licorice pizza). Neither star’s role has been confirmed yet, but I suspect Rockwell will vote for the titular character, with Waits likely portraying his alien detective partner.
As I mentioned earlier, Ray Gunn coming to Netflix sometime later this year. It’s also not the only animated offering from the streaming giant that’s been in the news recently. Last Thursday (April 2), Netflix released the first trailer for Academy Award winner Michael B. Jordan’s new film The bootywith the family-friendly film set to arrive on May 1.
