- A new free to play Border areas the game is launched on mobile
- Zynga is calling Borderlands Mobile a “time limited test” for the iPhone
- The game is only available in the US at this time
Out of nowhere and with little fanfare, Zynga has launched a brand new free-to-play Border areas game for mobile.
Borderlands Mobile was suddenly announced by the mobile game company on Thursday this week, somewhat by accident, and is developed by Star Wars: Hunters study, NaturalMotion.
The spin-off game, which Zynga calls a “time-limited test,” doesn’t have a fancy title and is currently only available on the App Store for iPhone users in the US. I tried to download the game in the UK but ran into a region lock issue.

“We are always looking at ways to introduce Border areas to new audiences,” a Zynga spokesperson said in a statement to IGN.
“Zynga’s NaturalMotion studio is currently conducting a limited-time test for an untitled Border areas mobile project, with Gearbox providing creative guidance on the franchise’s design, history and lore. We hope the players enjoy this new Border areas experience and look forward to their feedback.”
No trailer or gameplay has been shared yet Borderlands Mobile at this time, but from the screenshots in the App Store it appears to include characters from the wider Border areas franchises, such as Tiny Tina, Moxxi, a Psycho and Claptrap.
We do know that the game is an “action-packed loot shooter” just like before Border areas game, features Vault Hunters and “brings the signature mayhem, art style and gun-toting adventure to mobile for the first time!”
“Hunt legendary loot drops and power up your abilities to customize the way you play,” reads the description. “Use everything from pistols to rocket launchers to make your enemies wish they never crossed your path! Master devastating action gameplay fully optimized for mobile devices. Fight against skags, bandits and bosses as you fight your way through a variety of exciting mission types, including campaign missions, Tower of Terror and Circle of Slaughter.”
We will have to wait and see if the game stays live and if it spreads to Android devices as well as other regions.
