Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday expressed satisfaction with the progress in US-Iran talks and said Pakistan was making all efforts to resolve the dispute.

Addressing the federal cabinet, the prime minister said Pakistan’s leadership was making full contribution to peace and mediation, noting that the top leadership of the US and Iran came to the negotiating table after 47 years.

“Our sincere efforts resulted in a cease-fire between the United States and Iran,” he said, adding that the cease-fire remains in effect.

Prime Minister Shehbaz praised the efforts of Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir for their role in facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States.

He further stated that he was privy to the main details of the negotiations, noting that the process had reached the brink of collapse at times.

“It is a matter of pride for the nation that Pakistan played a mediating role between the two countries,” the Prime Minister said.

The Premier added that world leaders had appreciated Pakistan’s role in promoting peace and noted that the Japanese Prime Minister also praised the country’s efforts.

Earlier during the Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister informed the members about his upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia and his recent contacts with friendly nations. The visit is expected to include discussions on the development of the situation in the Middle East and the progress of negotiations between Iran and the United States.

Nearly 24 hours of talks between the US and Iran ended in Islamabad on Sunday, with both sides digging into core demands but leaving the door open for further engagement.

The talks, which began on Saturday afternoon, initially took place indirectly before moving into rare face-to-face engagement. The negotiations stretched deep into the night and Sunday morning and emphasized both the complexity of the problems and the seriousness of the effort.

For Pakistan, hosting the talks was both a diplomatic game and an opportunity to assert its relevance on the global stage. In a televised statement at the end of the talks, Dar thanked both sides for responding to Islamabad’s call for a ceasefire and accepting negotiations.
