- First full trailer for new ‘unconventional’ crime drama Mint published by the BBC
- Coming to BBC iPlayer from 20 April, created by Scraper director Charlotte Regan
- Explores “what love can feel like when everyone outside your family is afraid of you”
The first full trailer for the new BBC crime drama Mint has been released (which you can catch up on below) and I can honestly say I have no idea what’s going on.
Because there’s nothing I need more than a new fear in the back of my head to keep me up at night! However, the roles of Emma Laird, Ben Coyle-Larner, Sam Riley, Laura Fraser and Lindsay Duncan seem to take their sensitive subject matter in a whole new direction.

All episodes will be on BBC iPlayer from 06.00 BST on Monday 20 April, with the first two airing on BBC One from 21:00 that evening. But what exactly are we letting ourselves in for?
BBC crime drama Mint’s first trailer is creepy, atmospheric and drowning in secrets
Look at
While the above trailer doesn’t exactly give anything away, here’s everything we know about it Mint so far.
We start with Shannon (Laird), the daughter of her area’s dominant crime family, who is desperately looking for romance in the shadow of her father, Dylan (Riley).
Shannon falls hard for Arran (Carner), a member of a rival crime family who has just arrived in town. Their love story presents an undeniable connection that changes both their lives for good, but not everyone in their lives sees it the same way.
Elsewhere, as Shannon and Arran navigate their forbidden romance, things are imploding for Shannon’s family. Dylan decides to step down as head of the family for mysterious reasons.
Basically it’s like Romeo and Juliet meets Channel 4’s Peopleif the trailer clip aesthetic is anything to go by. There are bound to be layers upon layers in Regan’s world building, so defining Mint simply as a crime story it is most likely to undersell things.
I’m all for bringing some avant-garde whimsy back to mainstream TV, so if you’re looking for a thriller that’s more experimental art than formulaic, I think you’ve found it.
