As part of Sustainability Week here at TechRadar, we’re looking for gadgets that are both useful and kind to the planet – and the new Chipolo x Secrid Miniwallet Trackable certainly fits that description.
Bluetooth tracker experts Chipolo have teamed up with specialist wallet makers Secrid to create something that can carry your cash and cards – and can also be quickly found from your phone if it goes missing.
As for the sustainability credentials, the wallet is locally produced in Europe and made from “responsible materials” which include at least 50% recycled plastic for the tracking card unit and ethically sourced leather for the wallet.
The article continues below
The wallet is able to hold a few bills plus up to nine cards, which slide out from the top of the wallet via a patented system that Secrid uses in some of its other wallets. The overall size is 21 mm x 65 mm x 102 mm (0.8 in x 2.6 in x 4.0 in).
“Born from a shared belief in thoughtful design and local production, Chipolo and Secrid have created this wallet to enhance your everyday life,” the marketing text reads. “The Secrid Miniwallet is precisely tuned to allow the Chipolo Card to perform to its full potential.”
You can pre-order the wallet now in the US and UK for $140 and £120 respectively from either Amazon or the Chipolo website (no news of an Australian launch yet). Your two color options are black and blue.
Cross-platform compatibility
As the wallet comes with a built-in Chipolo Card tracker, it can be located through the Chipolo app as well as through device tracking apps available from Apple (Find My) and Google (Find Hub).
In addition to seeing where your wallet is on a map, you can have the Miniwallet Trackable make a sound of up to 110 decibels so you can find out exactly where it’s going. The pouch is apparently specifically designed to maximize that volume level.
You can also do reverse tracking: there is a button on the wallet you can press that will trigger a sound on your smartphone as long as you have the Chipolo app installed. If you have your cards and cash but can’t find your phone, this can help.
The card tracker should last about a year between recharges – depending on how often you lose it and need to activate its ringtone – and recharging can be done via any Qi-compatible wireless charger.
Without testing it, I’m impressed with what Miniwallet Trackable offers compared to, say, Apple AirTags — there’s no need to remember to pack an extra tracker, and it’s easily tracked from both Android and iOS devices.
As someone who uses lots of Apple and non-Apple devices on a daily basis, cross-platform compatibility is really a must. If you’d rather just get the Chipolo card on its own, it’s yours for $38.99 or £38.99.
