- Spotify’s mobile apps get new playlist features
- You can now create and manage playlists on the go
- Some but not all users on Android and iOS will see the update
The latest Spotify upgrade rolling out to users is one I’ve been waiting years for that will really make a difference to on-the-go listening: the ability to create and manage playlist folders from mobile apps.
While you’ve previously been able to view playlist folders on mobile, you haven’t been able to create, edit or delete them — something that’s changing now, 15 years after the feature was first introduced, as Android Authority reports.
Threads on Reddit suggest that some people are seeing the update, although it doesn’t seem to have rolled out to everyone yet. “I’ve wanted this for a very very long time now,” says one poster, summing up the overall sentiment of most Spotify users.

Since there’s been no official word from Spotify, it’s possible that this is just a limited test for now (the code for the upgrade was actually spotted by Android Authority back in March). It may take a while for everyone to see it on their phones and tablets.

You can now create folders on mobile (and move playlists to them) from r/truespotify
I’m using Spotify for Android in the UK and I don’t see the option yet: apparently it pops up if you tap + (plus) button on Library page. You will then be prompted to choose a name for your new folder and it will then be added to the list.
There are also a few additional tweaks worth mentioning. As well as being able to create new folders for your playlists, the update adds the ability to move existing playlists into them – so you can clean up your library without going to Spotify on the desktop.
Users have also seen the ability to play all the playlists inside a particular folder at once and to shuffle between the full set of tracks across the entire folder. This matches what you can already do on the desktop and web.apps.
Let’s hope this is something everyone gets sooner rather than later: 15 years is a long time to wait for a feature to migrate from desktop to mobile. Perhaps it’s part of the ongoing celebration of Spotify’s 20th anniversary.
