- James Gunn has shared an update on three DCU Chapter One projects
- A film announced in January 2023 is no longer in active development
- Two long-dormant shows are still in the works
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has given fans an update on three beleaguered DC Universe (DCU) projects — and it’s bad news for one of them. In response to a fan on Threads, Gunn confirmed it The authoritya film that was part of Gunn’s first DCU Chapter One line-up announcement in January 2023 has been cancelled.
As part of a longer response to someone who theorized that Gunn planned to write and/or direct the film, he said: “The script wasn’t quite there, but more importantly it didn’t work in relation to the larger DCU, both in terms of story and practical concerns. Maybe [we’ll revisit it] one day [but] Not soon.”
Revealed alongside new solo adventures for DC icons Superman and Batman as part of Gunn and co-director Peter Safran’s new cinematic franchise, The authority was set to be influenced by the eponymous anti-hero team’s comic book series published under DC’s Wildstorm sister company.

However, with the DCU Chapter One slate undergoing some changes since the early 2023 reveal, The Authority’s film adaptation has become the first major casualty of Gunn and Safran’s reign.
As for two other productions – Booster gold and The lost paradise — which has been trapped in development limbo for over three years, Gunn shared a more positive, if brief, update.
In response to another query about two shows still expected to hit HBO Max at some point, Gunn wrote: “Booster gold is in development. The lost paradise is in extreme development.”
Of course, that doesn’t indicate when we might see any of them. Nevertheless, it does confirm that both TV series are still in the works, which is welcome news when we’ve heard very little about them since they were confirmed as part of DCU Chapter One.
Where Booster gold is concerned, the DCU’s most unlikely TV show should have found its showrunner last July. But in March, DC fans began to debate Booster gold‘s fate amid reports that its showrunner had left. Gunn’s latest comments will therefore cause some fans to breathe a sigh of relief.
Things have been even quieter The lost paradise front. Indeed, with last June’s announcement that a Wonder Woman movie was on the way, fans had been wondering if the Wonder Woman spin-off TV show would ever see the light of day. Long story short: it will.
Are you sad? The authority is there no more? And which of Booster gold and The lost paradise are you most eager to see? Tell me in the comments.
