Experts link cleaning the home with better mental health

ISLAMABAD:

Psychiatric experts are increasingly highlighting the positive impact of maintaining a clean and organized home on overall psychological well-being, noting that simple household chores can play a meaningful role in reducing stress and anxiety.

As mental health awareness continues to grow, experts suggest that maintaining a clean home should not only be viewed as a domestic responsibility, but also an important part of self-care.

Speaking to the media, clinical psychologist Sidratul Muntaha said cluttered surroundings often contribute to feelings of overwhelm and mental fatigue. Disorganized spaces, she explained, can serve as constant visual reminders of unfinished tasks, making it difficult for individuals to focus or relax.

In contrast, a clean and orderly home promotes a sense of control and stability, which helps ease daily stress.

She further explained that engaging in routine cleaning activities such as sweeping, organizing or tidying can have therapeutic value. These tasks provide a structured and productive outlet that allows individuals to shift their attention away from negative thoughts while achieving small, tangible goals. This sense of accomplishment can significantly improve mood and motivation.

Cleaning can act as a simple but effective coping mechanism, she noted, adding that it not only improves the physical environment but also contributes to a clearer and calmer state of mind.

Another clinical psychologist, Mawra, who works at a government hospital, said behavioral science research suggests maintaining order in one’s surroundings can increase concentration, improve sleep quality and support better decision-making.
