- Battlefield 6 Season 3 launches today
- It introduces a massive new map and new weapons, among other larger content
- One developer described the team as “100% dedicated” to improving the game
right now, Battlefield 6 it looks like it’s a bit of a rough place. After a record-breaking launch, the number of Steam players has increased (this is according to data from SteamDB), and although the game remains one of the most played on the platform, its population is less than 10% of the high peak.
Developer Battlefield Studios (a combination of Electronic Arts’ Dice, Criterion, Ripple Effect and Motive teams) was hit with layoffs earlier this year, which many speculated were the result of the game failing to retain players in line with expectations.
Still, the team is working hard to release regular updates with the latest, Season 3, launching today. It introduces much of what fans have been asking for: the biggest Battlefield 6 shortly, in a remake of the beloved Railway to Golmud from Battlefield 4a selection of new weapons and ranked battle royale gameplay.
Ahead of the season’s launch, executive producer Philippe Ducharme told TechRadar Gaming that the team wanted to find “the right balance” with the map being added.
“We’ve talked about the Season 3 cards. We’ve also hinted at the Season 4 cards, which are also very big cards,” he said.
“We look at it as an overall portfolio, and we make sure we’re delivering cards that fit well with the different playstyles and that fit well with the themes of the season. We actually had a need to have larger size cards, which is something we’re filling now with Golmud and will continue to iterate on for future seasons.”
While their prevalence was a common complaint at launch, that doesn’t mean small maps (often called ‘meat grinders’ by players) are going away.
“The meat grinders are always fun. They’re different and they can be very frustrating, but they’re also fun and engaging cards,” argued Ducharme. “It’s about making sure we’re able to find the right balance between what we offer our players each season to get them excited to come back.”
He went on to add that the team is actively “committed to making the experience better” with each new update. “Every season we deliver extremely compelling new content that comes in that’s exciting for players, it’s different,” he continued. “We’re also 100% dedicated to making sure the overall experience, the foundation we’ve built, keeps getting better.”
We’ll have to wait and see if Season 3 brings back the expiration date Battlefield 6 players, or even successfully attracting new ones, but if you are interested in giving the game a try, you can buy it on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S and PC now.
Battlefield Redseca standalone battle royale component, is out for free on the same platforms.
