The 2027 America’s Cup cycle begins at the Bay of Angels off the coast of Sardinia for the first of the inaugural regattas. Although the four-day Sardinia event does not count towards the actual America’s Cup competition – which is set for July 2027 – it will provide the clearest indication yet of where each team stands.
And a significant adjustment to the format has further increased the effort. For the first time in the modern era, each team will be allowed to field two entries: one boat manned by their first-choice team and another manned by the stars of their Women & Youth set-up. Impress in the preliminaries and they could even get a place at the top table.
While Emirates Team New Zealand, Luna Rossa and GB1 have each opted for this option, Sardinia has come too early for Team Australia and America Racing Challenger Team USA, who are running the event outright. Tudor Team Alinghi and La Roche Posay Racing are fielding one boat each, making a fleet of eight.
Olympic gold medalist and 2024 America’s Cup winner Nathan Outteridge skippers the Emirates Team New Zealand main team, who are the reigning champions.
There will be eight fleet races in total, including up to three boats on Friday and Saturday. A minimum of two fleet races will take place on Sunday before a winner-take-all showdown between the top two teams.
