At least one person was killed and seven injured in an explosion near a passenger bus traveling from Khuzdar to Rawalpindi on Sunday, officials said.

The blast took place on the M-8 highway when a passenger bus traveling from Khuzdar to Rawalpindi passed a vehicle carrying explosives, Express News reported.

Out of the 13 passengers on board, eight sustained injuries, one of whom succumbed to their wounds.

The authorities have shifted the body to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) while the injured are receiving treatment at Trauma Center Khuzdar.

Tax officials confirmed that the explosives were planted in a stationary vehicle on the side of the road, strategically targeting the passenger bus. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

Authorities are investigating the attack and enhanced security measures are expected to be implemented in the coming days.

The incident comes amid a wave of violence in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militant activities have intensified in recent months.

Earlier this month, an explosion in Turbat killed four people and injured 32, with the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claiming responsibility.

According to the CRSS Annual Security Report 2024, last year was one of the deadliest in recent history for Pakistan, with over 2,500 violence-related deaths. Balochistan recorded 782 fatalities, making it one of the worst-hit regions in the country.
