Karen Bass makes it to the LA mayoral race – waiting for opponent Pratt or Raman

Incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has secured a seat in the upcoming mayoral election this midterm on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

As Bass advanced to LA this year, her opponents, Nithya Raman and Spencer Pratt, are competing to secure the final spot, reports CBS.

In the mayoral race, only the top two vote getters will run for office in the midterms.

For the uninitiated, California uses a voting system called the top-two primary system.

Only the two candidates who received the most votes advance to the general election, regardless of whether they come from the same party.

Although vote counting is still underway, Bass will have to wait a little longer to see who she faces in the runoff election.

The runoff election saw a close race, with Bass leading by a slim 26% lead and Raman closing the gap at 25%, while Pratt is at 33%, according to early May 28 UC Berkeley-LA Times polls.

The LA primary has seen a close race that drew national attention, coupled with events in 2025 that caused heavy damage in the Palisades and Eaton fires.

Bass has announced the race as her last run for public office.

She served for two decades as a congresswoman and LA’s 43rd mayor.

Bass remained an experienced congresswoman, serving in the House for 12 years before being elected to the state assembly from LA between 2004 and 2010.
