- Widow’s Bay episode 8 is now out on Apple TV
- It involves a classic slasher movie chase sequence and ‘final girl’ showdown
- Actress Kate O’Flynn says it took two nights to shoot, but it took a physical toll on her
Widow’s Bay star Kate O’Flynn has opened up about the physical toll the show’s penultimate episode took on her.
Speaking exclusively to TechRadar, O’Flynn, who plays fan-favorite character Patricia, revealed that she lost her voice while filming the Apple TV Original’s eighth chapter. The reason? She did all the screaming as part of the series’ latest entry.
Full spoilers immediately follow before Widow’s Bay episode 8, titled ‘Your Baggage’. Come back now if you haven’t caught up.
As Tom and Wyck seemingly end the island’s centuries-long curse in last week’s episode, the pair and Patricia quietly celebrate a job well done.
Or so they think, because ‘Your Baggage’ reveals that Richard Warren’s death has not brought an end to the curse plaguing the titular town. That’s actually made clear via its Patricia-centric story, which sees O’Flynn’s eccentric individual pursued by The Boogeyman. It is the serial killer who murdered several girls on the island years earlier, and with whom Patricia claims to have survived her own terrifying ordeal.
“Your Baggage” centers around a classic horror story chase scene in which The Boogeyman relentlessly follows Patricia — at night, no less — across the eponymous settlement. And while the entire sequence didn’t take that long to shoot, it was nonetheless a physically draining experience that temporarily left its mark on O’Flynn.
“It was physically exhausting,” O’Flynn said of filming the Apple TV show’s eighth episode. “I mean, it’s just me running and screaming for what feels like forever! It actually only took two nights [to film]but I ended up losing my voice the first night because I wasn’t used to screaming that much – and that’s not ideal when you have another night of screaming and talking coming up.”
However, despite the physical toll this week’s episode placed on O’Flynn, it’s clear from my chat with Widow’s Bay‘s breakout star that she clearly enjoyed the whole experience. In fact, from playing himself out ScreamIn a chase scene in the vein of Patricia’s ‘last girl’ showdown with The Boogeyman, O’Flynn had fun filming the buzzworthy series’ latest chapter.
“I don’t think I ever thought I’d make my own version of one Scream chase sequence,” O’Flynn told me. “It was surreal and amazing and almost an out-of-body experience because I grew up watching those movies and other iconic horror movies.
“And then to have a ‘final girl’ moment — I hadn’t heard of that before I started doing press for this show — with Patricia reaching out with a shotgun of all things, it just felt really satisfying for Patricia specifically. She’s the one who finally found her own power and becomes so badass at the end, which was very satisfying to me.”
With only two more episodes left Widow’s Bay back on the air, it’s no surprise that amid countless other conversations about the show’s plot and ongoing mysteries, fans want to know if it will be renewed for another season.
Widow’s Bay guest star Hamish Linklater didn’t give anything away when I asked him if he knew Season 2 was in the works. But given that O’Flynn is a central cast member, surely showrunner Katie Dippold had privately told her that Apple had greenlit another 10-part installment?
“My lips are sealed,” O’Flynn replied when I pressed her on the subject. “What I will say is that as Patricia I would happily continue to live and play in this weird and wonderful world because I love working with everyone on the show.”
Widow’s Bay episodes 1 to 8 can be streamed now on Apple TV, also known as one of the world’s best streaming services.
