Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday congratulated Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe on their election as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the period 2027-2028.

In a post on X, Dar expressed his best wishes to the newly elected members, writing: “Congratulations to Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe on their election as non-permanent members of the UNSC for the period 2027-2028.” “We wish them the best of luck in fulfilling this important responsibility,” he added.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s diplomatic priorities during its current tenure in the Council, Dar said Pakistan, which will remain a member of the Security Council until 2026, is committed to promoting peace, security, dialogue and multilateral cooperation.

He also expressed optimism about future cooperation with the incoming members, saying Pakistan looks forward to working closely with them to advance common goals and contribute to “a more peaceful, secure and just world.”

The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday elected Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe to the 15-member UN Security Council for a two-year term starting January 1, 2027.

The Security Council is the only UN body that can make legally binding decisions, such as imposing sanctions and authorizing the use of force. It has five permanent veto-wielding members: Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.

The remaining 10 members are elected, with five new members each year. This year, one comes from the Africa Group, one from the Latin American and Caribbean Group, one from the Asia-Pacific Group and two from the Western European and Others Group.

Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia and Liberia will continue to serve as non-permanent members of the Security Council until the end of 2027.

In June 2024, Pakistan was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, securing a massive majority. In the election, Pakistan received 182 votes in the 193-member General Assembly, well above the required two-thirds majority of 124 votes.
