The council also discussed the proposed draft rules for council procedure and conduct

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan’s Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Thursday decided to introduce certain changes to the code of conduct for judges while considering a number of institutional and administrative issues during a meeting held at the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The meeting was chaired by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi in his capacity as Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council. It was attended by Chief Justice of the Federal Constitutional Court Amin-ud-Din Khan, Supreme Court Justices Munib Akhtar and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Federal Constitutional Court Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Lahore High Court Justice Aalia Neelum. Chief Justice of Peshawar High Court Justice SM Attique Shah attended as a substitute.

The council also discussed the proposed draft rules for council procedure and conduct. However, the case was postponed for further consideration.

In what was described as a demonstration of institutional accountability and transparency, the council raised questions regarding some of its own members. To that end, meetings were held in various configurations in accordance with relevant constitutional provisions.

The reconstituted council included Supreme Court Justices Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Ayesha A. Malik along with Federal Constitutional Court Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Ali Baqar Najafi as alternate members.

During the negotiations, the Council dealt with ten questions under Article 209 of the Constitution and disposed of all matters on the agenda.
