- Several hints about a foldable iPhone have appeared
- iOS apps are updated to a larger screen size
- Apple is also asking developers to plan for larger screens
Rumors of an ‘iPhone Fold’ have been swirling for years, but it looks very likely that 2026 will be the year when Apple finally launches a foldable phone – and many of the latest hints in this direction come from Apple itself.
As discovered by MacRumors, several native iOS apps are being updated to include a landscape mode so they adjust when you rotate your iPhone (and fit nicely on the large screen of a foldable iPhone when it’s open, too).
The updated apps include Apple Music, Reminders, Weather, Home, Podcasts, Fitness, Health, Shortcuts, Find My, Voice Memos and Apple Watch app, so this is clearly a concerted and deliberate effort by Apple developers.
These landscape orientation modes aren’t just the default page-turned layout either. There are left-aligned sidebars in many of the apps to make it easier to navigate these apps when in landscape mode or on a larger screen.
Developer warning
Apple is asking developers to start designing their iPhone apps for widescreen aspect ratios. This is the biggest hint that the iPhone Ultra Fold is coming in September. video source: Apple Platform’s State of the Union pic.twitter.com/33Vm1rkC8D10 June 2026
Landscape modes aren’t the only hint we’ve gotten about an upcoming iPhone Fold, either. As discovered by Vadim Yuryev, Apple’s Cindy Barrett in one of the presentations online as part of WWDC 2026 encouraged developers to code for different screen sizes.
“You’re designing for a dynamic range of sizes and aspect ratios,” Barrett said as he showed off some of the changes Apple has made under the hood with iOS 27 — another indication that iPhone apps need to be more flexible now.
So while Apple hasn’t actually acknowledged that a foldable iPhone is on the way, it looks like the rumors are true: The device will indeed launch around September time alongside the iPhone 18 Pro.
And while we’ve referred to it as the iPhone Fold here, those in the know suggest it will be called the iPhone Ultra, a naming scheme Apple has used with its products in the past.
