Alien: Isolation 2 creative director Al Hope has revealed that he and the team at Creative Assembly had ideas about making a sequel before finishing the first game.
In an interview with TechRadar Gaming at Summer Game Fest (SGF) 2026, Hope discussed the creation of a sequel after the massive success of 2014 Alien: Isolationa game that many look back on as the best Alien game and one of the best horror games ever made.
The creative director said he was “super proud of the first game and the reaction to it,” although it felt like the team “took a bit of a risk” because “there was nothing quite like it,” but he also said he had ideas for a sequel even during development.
“I had been thinking about making a sequel before we even finished the first game, about what it could be,” Hope said. “I suppose that was around the time we saw the reception to the first game and how people really engaged with the nature of this experience, where it’s not scripted, it’s not choreographed.”
Hope compared other survivor horror titles such as Resident Evilwhere “the dog would always jump out the window at the same time,” and explained how having an experience where it was “systemic” and the systems reacting and reacting to the player was “at the core” of Isolation game.
“It felt like it’s our core,” he added, explaining that the idea behind the sequel was “let’s just evolve, take what we love or what people love and evolve with it,” but in ways that feel “intuitive.”
“So the first game is about being in the tin can in space, in the space station, being claustrophobic and trapped, and it’s super cool,” Hope continued. “We love it. We felt what if we were on the surface of a planet now, we’re being chased on the outside, and we also had the inside experience.
“We’ve kind of had the best of both worlds. And then it was thinking, okay, well, let’s tell a new story. We’ve got this new world. Let’s tell a new story with a new main character, and so I guess all these things kind of fall into place naturally. I think that was, that was the starting point for us.”
As Hope put it, i Insulation 2players will be in a new, external environment and the story will be a “continuation” following a new protagonist, Blake, but the core experience will still be “improvise to survive the systemic nature of the entities you encounter” and use familiar tools to achieve it.
“The real attention to detail in the fidelity and immersion of the world, the atmosphere, which is at our core,” he said, “A lot of the same rules apply. It’s about line of sight, about not being seen, about what tools you have at hand that can divert, disrupt, distract, so much of the gameplay remains the same. In the future, we’ll share the more interesting ways to create and survive.”

Alien: Isolation 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s launching on PS5, Xbox Series X, Series S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
