Looking for a different day?
A new NEW Strands puzzle appears at midnight every day for your time zone – meaning some people always play ‘today’s game’ while others play ‘yesterday’s’. If you’re looking for the Wednesday puzzle instead then click here: NEW Strand’s Hints and Answers for Wednesday, June 17 (Game #836).
Strands is the NYT’s latest word game, following the likes of Wordle, Spelling Bee and Connections – and it’s great fun. It can be difficult though, so read on for my Strands tips.
Want more word-based fun? So check out my NYT Connections today and Quordle Today pages for tips and answers to these games, and Marc’s Wordle Today page for the original viral word game.

NEW Strands today (game #837) – the answers
The answers to today’s Strands, game #837, are…
- CRAB
- TONGUE
- SHARK
- FISH
- PLANKTON
- URCHIN
- ALGAE
- SPANGRAM: CORAL REEF
- My assessment: Hard
- My score: Perfect
I didn’t need any hints in this game, but I wasted a lot of time getting parts of words as non-play words before I realized what we were actually looking for: “chin” before I saw URCHIN, “weed” before SEEAWEED, and “reef” long before I put together the Spangram.
I spent a few years by the sea and regularly swam along the coastline, but I don’t think I ever thought about what was under my feet on the sea floor.
But on TikTok I recently saw some underwater footage of exactly where I used to swim and was shocked to see thousands and thousands of starfish – it was quite a strange feeling to think they were probably there all along.
Anyway, I digress. Because of its marine nature, which you can no doubt see made me daydream, I thoroughly enjoyed this game even though I found it difficult.
Yesterday’s NYT Strand’s Answer (Wednesday, June 17, Game #836)
- BUCKET
- TRACTOR
- SAW HORSE
- FORK
- WHEELBARROW
- FRAMEWORK: AGRICULTURE
