- Triangle unveils a beautiful new Solstice range
- Solstice 8 floorstanders, Solstice 3 bookshelf speaker, plus C3 center channel
- A brand new custom tweeter is their big selling point
Did you think the summer solstice was on June 21st? Maybe, but Triangle The solstice apparently falls a day later. That’s because French audio brand Triangle has unveiled its latest family of audio products called, you guessed it, Solstice.
This new family consists of three major releases. First, there are the Solstice 8 floorstanding speakers, which are connected to the Solstice 3 bookshelf speakers to save space, and rounding out the family is the C3 center channel. Pictured above is Solstice 8.
I’ve reported on a few floorstanders at this point, and the Triangle Solstice 8’s asking price feels a little lower than the normal price. A pair retails for $2,799 / £1,999 (about AU$4,000), which obviously isn’t cheap, but it’s still cheapeh. Last week I covered another pair of speakers from Focal that cost 87.5 times the Solstice 8, so you know, there it is…
The bookshelf speakers are of course cheaper. You can buy the Solstice 3 for $1,349 / £999 (approx. AU$2,000) per pair, and the C3 costs $750 / £579 (about AU$1,080), although the standard price of such products can be much lower than floor stands.
Triangle’s Solstice range goes on sale later in June, through whichever hi-fi retailer in your area the brand works with.
Need more triangle
It appears that a major selling point of the new Triangle Solstice range is the horn treble found in each of the three products, designed specifically for the range. It is arched, made of die-cast aluminum and is designed to reduce resonance.
It’s a refreshing change, as most of the time when I report on new speakers it feels like the mid-bass or low-end is the focus. I’ve written about all manner of bass technology, and had my socks blown off in all sorts of directions by pounding bass in listening demos. Putting high-end as a focal point feels unusual today.
The tweeter is connected by 16 cm mid-woofers; two in C3, one in 3 and none in 8 (it also gets 16mm drivers, but there is one midrange and two woofers). These are made from cellulose pulp to provide a neutral sound profile.
The Solstice 3 and C3 both get single terminals for connection, while the Solstice 8 gets a double terminal with bi-wiring and bi-amping to avoid mixed signals or distortion.
Each member of the Solstice series comes in teak, birch, black ash or … white. The latter isn’t white-looking wood (like ash, maybe), it’s just… white. Maybe not the most unique speakers I’ve ever seen, but the braced cabinet with stacked drivers is a proven design – and after all, it’s the sound that counts.
