- AI Company has released a design of a keyboard -dock for smartphones
- With a beige color scheme and a pseudo-mechanical keyboard it has a strong 1980-tallet feeling
- It is expected to cost less than $ 250 and will appeal to those looking for a PSION 5MX replacement
Amber.page, an AI startup for authors, has teased a new keyboard box that transforms an iPhone into a portable, portable-like writing device.
Shared by the company’s founder Justin Mitchell on threads, the reproduction of what he calls the Amberdeck Show a Clamshell-style design reminiscent of Retro Tech, as a Mini Tandy TRS-80 model 100 or PSION 5MX. The latter had a similar design with what was largely considered one of the best keyboards ever made for a device of its size.
The device offers a minimalist setup for the preparation of articles, editing text and even tackling the author block with support from the start-up AI-driven writing assistant.
Mitchell wrote: “Have food made on some hardware for Amber during the holiday break. Have always wanted a clam shell iPhone keyboard for focused writing on the go, so I made one. “
The case is not intended for a permanent enclosure to your phone; Rather, it acts as a docking station and transforms your device into a focused writing tool with a pseudo-mechanical high-travel keyboard that has a compact 60% layout. Yanko design Says, when you are rooted, you will not be able to use your phone for usual tasks, such as accessing the camera or making calls, but if you are focused on writing it will be a good thing.
An ongoing work

The case is not intended for a permanent enclosure to your phone; Rather, it acts as a docking station and transforms your device into a focused writing tool with a pseudo-mechanical high-travel keyboard that has a compact 60% layout. Yanko design Says, when you are rooted, you will not be able to use your phone for usual tasks, such as accessing the camera or making calls, but if you are focused on writing it will be a good thing.
The Clamshell case includes an adjustable hinge for screen positioning and a charging port for the keyboard itself. Yanko design Remarks that the case does not appear to support reviews of the phone and the keyboard lacks backlighting, which will limit its applicability in low light settings. That said, this is still only a prototype so things can change.
In fact, in another thread, Mitchell has updated the design based on feedback and suggestions from his supporters of social media, including changes made to improve functionality and compatibility. In the updated design, hinged is centered and has a dual -action mechanism that allows the case to lay completely flat thanks to an internal hole inside the top shell.
The arrow keys have been configured for a standard layout, with the Shift key moved right and enlarged for a more intuitive writing experience. A hole has been added around the front plate, making it easy to jump off and customize or swap as needed. To accommodate a wider range of devices, including Android phones, the insert on the inside has been squared for better versatility. In addition, the lip of the case has moved to the top.
Mitchell has suggested that Amberdeck could sell for less than $ 250, and while these early reproductions are just a preview, the case could potentially appeal to authors, journalists and editors who want to transform their phones into compact writing devices that can be used everywhere.
