ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has restrained the National Highway Authority (NHA) from collecting additional tolls from citizens.

The court stayed a notification imposing 50% extra toll on non-M-Tag users and low balance motorists till the next hearing.

The Supreme Court also issued notices to the NHA and other parties involved in the case, asking them to submit their replies.

Judge Arbab Muhammad Tahir issued a stay order preventing the collection of the additional tolls pending further proceedings in the case.

The latest development comes months after the government suspended a proposed quarterly toll hike following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s directives, citing the need to provide relief to the public amid the prevailing economic challenges.

In April, Federal Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan directed the NHA to withdraw a notification issued on April 1 and halt the hike, which was to take effect from April 5.

A new notification was subsequently issued, formally canceling the previous decision.
