Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday termed the development of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) as a priority for the federal government and said that special attention was given to improving infrastructure, communication, energy, education, health and tourism as well as increasing employment opportunities in the region.
During a meeting with newly elected members of the GB Assembly belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), who called on him in Islamabad, the Prime Minister said that the local economy would be further strengthened by tapping the region’s natural resources, tourist destinations and mineral reserves.
He said the provision of quality education, modern technical training and dignified employment to young people was a key government priority which would enable them to play a role in national development.
The prime minister said that elected officials served as a direct source of awareness of public expectations, problems and priorities, adding that regardless of political affiliation, the sole purpose of leadership must be public service and making people’s lives easier.

Appreciating the people of GB for demonstrating their love, loyalty and national unity with Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz said the construction of four Daanish schools in the region was in its final phase and classes would begin next year.
He also said that work on a 100 megawatt solar power project is progressing rapidly and assured the delegation that the federal government was using all available resources to ensure timely completion of ongoing development projects in GB.
The Prime Minister said an early warning system for climate change and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) had been installed in GB to provide timely information to residents and help them cope with adverse weather conditions.
He said effective communication between the federal government and the local leadership was essential to address public issues, ensure better governance and promote transparency.

Assuring the delegation that their suggestions would be considered, the Prime Minister said the government would work in coordination with them for the welfare of the people of GB. He also called on the parliamentarians to play a constructive role and expressed hope that GB would achieve further development and prosperity through collective efforts.
Prime Minister Shehbaz directed the formation of a committee, to be headed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, to review the actionable proposals presented by the lawmakers and submit a report. The committee will also include Minister for Kashmir Affairs and GB Amir Muqam and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah.
