World Champion Russian Figure Tags aboard flight involved in Midair Collision, says the Kremlin

Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were a Russian art skating that competed in several Olympic games and medaled in several world championships.

The Kremlin said on Thursday that the art skating stars were among them aboard an American Airlines flight that collided with a US army helicopter near Reagan International Airport on Wednesday night.

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Shishkova and Naumov were on the plane.

“Unfortunately we see that this sad information is confirmed. There were other citizens there. Bad news today from Washington. We are sorry,” he said.

It was Naumov’s coach who introduced the couple in 1985 and wanted them to work together despite Naumov who first guided the idea. They began working together in 1987 and competing and won bronze in European championship in 1991 while representing the former Soviet Union. The couple continued to win two more bronze and silver medals in case.

Shishkova and Naumov also earned recognitions on the world stage. At the 1993 World Cup, the two served a bronze medal. The following year in Chiba, Japan, the two picked up their first gold medal. They ended with a silver in 1995 in Birmingham, UK.

The couple competed in the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France and the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. They finished in fifth place in 1992 and fourth in 1994.

Shishkova and Naumov married in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1995, and they moved to Connecticut. They had a son, Maxim competing in men’s singles in the US
