- Windows 10 21H2 and earlier will lose support for all OneDrive updates
- 22H2 will still receive feature and security updates until October 2028
- Affected users are encouraged to upgrade to Windows 11
Microsoft has announced that it will end OneDrive sync app updates on Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier starting August 15, 2026.
In addition to no longer offering new features, affected devices will also be incompatible with new bug fixes and security updates, marking the official end of OneDrive on these devices.
The app will continue to work after losing update support, but system changes and new bugs may make it impossible to fix over time.
Windows 10 is starting to lose its OneDrive sync support
From the August 2026 deadline onwards, users may experience reduced functionality, compatibility issues and security risks, with the company instead pushing Windows 11 as a viable alternative to keep OneDrive working as expected.
Some later versions of the current OS, including version 22H2, will continue to receive feature, reliability and security updates until October 10, 2028. 22H2 was the final version of Windows 10 – the next upgrade after that represents a completely new OS that brings some hardware limitations.
“This change aligns OneDrive support with the Windows lifecycle policy and helps Microsoft focus ongoing investments on supported operating systems,” Microsoft wrote in a support article.
Users reluctant to upgrade the OS can still access OneDrive through the browser if the app ends up breaking due to incompatibility.
Instead of advising to make OneDrive compatible on Windows 10, Microsoft is encouraging affected users to finally upgrade to Windows 11. Windows 10 still accounts for about 28% of all Windows installations (per Statcounter), compared to 70% for Windows 11.
