- Senior Director and Video Game Industry Advisor at Circana, Mat Piscatella, reports that only seven PlayStation games have sold more than 100,000 physical units year-to-date in the US
- He says two games “sold more than 10,000 physical units in the US during the week ending July 11, 2026”
- This comes as fans are pushing Sony to reverse its plan to end production of physical discs
In light of Sony’s decision to stop production of physical game discs, an industry analyst has reported that physical PlayStation games are not selling too well in the United States.
Last week, angry PlayStation fans descended on the comments section of the latest Marvel’s Wolverine trailer, another attempt to pressure Sony to go back on its plan to end production of physical discs from January 2028.
At the time of writing, the video has over 12,600 comments, with the vast majority from fans sharing their thoughts on the decision.
Now, in response to a news story about the situation, Circana senior director and video game industry advisor Mat Piscatella has shared some interesting statistics about the state of physical game sales in the US.
Writing about Bluesky, Piscatella said: “Two PlayStation video games sold more than 10,000 physical units in the US during the week ending July 11, 2026.
“Seven has sold more than 100,000 physical units year to date.” He also later clarified that the numbers did not just refer to first-party PlayStation games, but “total PlayStation. All games, all publishers, all PlayStation platforms.”
Addressing the backlash from fans, the analyst added: “It’s cool to comment, use your voice and all that. But it’s cheap to comment, [I don’t know] idk.”
Which games those are are unclear, but global estimates shared earlier this month by Alinea Analytics (via GamesRadar ) suggest EA Sports FC 26, Resident Evil Requiemand 007 First light could be among the seven. It is estimated to Requiem specifically, that 27.8% of its 3.5 million copies sold came from physical discs.
Sony has been remarkably quiet about the backlash, and according to several analysts, despite the backlash from fans, the PlayStation maker won’t reverse its decision because “digital is just too lucrative.”
“Obviously they knew what the online reaction would be and they are now waiting for this storm to pass,” said Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of Japanese game industry consultancy Kantan Games.
“Sony has over 120 million active PlayStation users. About 50 million people subscribe to PlayStation Plus. As a thought experiment, let’s say 500,000 cancel in protest, that would only be 1% of that business gone – certainly not enough for Sony to start rethinking. Digital is just too lucrative.
He added, “Their current profit margins have been too weak for years now, so they feel they have to act,” Toto added. “From a financial perspective, digital sales just make too much sense, especially for platform holders.”
