Six Chinese citizens running businesses in Karachi have drawn a harassment complaint about local police after receiving insurance from provincial officials that their concerns would be investigated, according to media reports on Monday.
The men had initially filed the complaint and claimed that their movements were limited by police under the pretext of security, which negatively affected their business.
In response, Sindh Province Government declared that any complaints should be dealt with through the Chinese Embassy rather than through the courts.
They also assured that the case would be investigated. The defense attorney for the men, Rehman Mahsud, confirmed that his clients were satisfied with the government’s insurance and chose to withdraw the petition.
According to Pakistani law, Chinese citizens must notify the police before traveling so that an escort can be arranged. This directive was introduced after the death of two Chinese citizens in a bombing in Karachi last year.
Baloch Liberation Army assumed responsibility for the attack and accused China of exploiting the provincial mineral resources.
China has repeatedly called on Pakistan to improve the security of its workers in the country, as many are involved in projects linked to China’s belt and road initiative, which is the financing of large-scale infrastructure development in Pakistan.
