- New legislation could prohibit Deepseek from government units
- Deepseek poses a threat to US national security, experts say
- US NAVY and NASA have already banned the app
Deepseeks AI app, which recently sent waves through the global AI market by offering a seemingly more powerful model developed at a relatively lower price than its competitors, should be banned from US government units, lawmakers have said.
Two congressmen are trying to introduce a Toparts Bill proposal to ban the app from government units as it constitutes a national security threat for the United States.
The bill introduced by US representatives Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) and Darin Lahood (R-IL) is entitled “No Deepseek on Government Devices Act.”
Protect us AI market by banning Deepseek
The two representatives are both senior members of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, where the bill was introduced after the Deepseek app was marked as a threat to us AI shares, with recent research from Feroot Security, which claims the app is feeding user information for companies under the control of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
“Our personal information is sent to China, there is no denial, and the Deepseek tool collects everything US users connect to it,” Feroot analyst Ivan Tsarynny told WSJ.
Some bans have already been introduced where the state of Texas is already banning the app from government units, and the US Navy and NASA prohibiting the app from their employee units. If the bill has been passed, the United States will follow in the footsteps of countries such as Australia, Italy and South Korea, which have already introduced similar legislation.
“We simply cannot risk CCP that infiltrates the units of our government officials and jeopardizing our national security,” Gottheimer said. Lahood repeated these feelings and said, “This Commonsense, Bipartisan piece of legislation will ban the app from federal worker phones while closing the back door’s operations that the company seeks to utilize for access.”
“It is critical that Congress protects the American data and continues to secure US leadership in AI,” La Hood said.
