The National Assembly on Tuesday passed the ‘MPs (wages and quotas) (amendments) Bill, 2025’, which approved an increase of 200% in wages and benefits of legislators.

NA speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq led the session, where six new bills were also introduced, including those addressing environmental protection and mandatory thalassemia screening. These bills were referred to the relevant standing committees for further review.

Under the amendment, MPs’ salaries and quotas for parliament have become equivalent to the federal secretaries. The monthly salary and quotas for MNAs and senators are set to RS519,000.

During the discussion, Sadiq noted, “You call Parliament false, and yet you don’t take it seriously. If a member does not want to accept the increased salary, they can give a written statement.”

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar also said, “Members who do not want to accept the increased salary must inform the speaker’s office.”

Earlier this year, in a rare show of unity, legislators from PML-N-LED-LED Government alliance supported a proposal from Imran Khan’s PTI to increase wages for parliamentarians within 200 times.

Before the amendment, MPs (MPS) earned a salary of RS188,000, which included a basic salary of RS150,000 and reimbursements of RS38,000. Following the proposed increase, MPs’ salaries and benefits are rising for RS519,000.

Adjustments to the Members’ Wages and Benefits have traditionally been made through amendments to the law on parliamentary wages and allowances. In the Bill 2024-25, however, the government amended the law and delegated the authority for such amendments to the Finance Committee.

On January 20, Parliament’s top house adopted a private member’s bill that tried to strengthen a parliamentary panel in issues related to parliamentary wages and allowances.
