Africa-1 cable lands in Karachi to strengthen Internet infrastructure

Karachi: In a positive development for Pakistani Netizens, which has been plagued by intermittent Internet problems in recent times, Africa-1 The uninmaraged cable has been linked to the country’s internet infrastructure.

The 10,000-kilometer Internet cable with high data transmission capacity-there connects Pakistan with Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt and France-Has been associated with Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) Exchange.

PTCL announced this milestone in a message to Pakistan Stock Exchange and highlighted a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday to officially connect to the cable with high capacity.

“The groundbreaking celebration to the high capacity Africa-1 submarine cable is set to 22 February 2025 in Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited’s (PTCL) landing page at sea view, Karachi,” the message reads.

“This marks a transformative milestone in promoting Pakistan’s digital connection.”

The investment for the Africa-1 initiative was approved by the PTCL Board of Directors in November 2020, equivalent to $ 59.5 million.

“This project aims to establish connection between UAE, Europe and Africa with several landing stations along the route,” the announcement added.

According to PTCL, the project is expected to be ready for service (RFS) in the first quarter of 2026.

When operational, the Africa-1 Submarine cable will allow PTCL to generate revenue from the project and contribute positively to the company’s top line growth.

All of these developments come in the midst of frequent internet disorders in the country.

Last month, Pakistan Telecommunication informed Authority (PTA) President General General (R) Hafeez Ur Rehman National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications that four new intruders were introduced to improve the country’s internet performance.
