It follows a campaign last year that reached hundreds of thousands of young children under 10. Polioviruses were recently detected in wastewater samples in Gaza, indicating that circulation is going on, which thus endangered young lives.
The campaign is led by the Palestinian Ministry of Health and is implemented with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Palestine Refugee Agency Unrwa and other partners.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini wrote in the post of social media platform X that 1,700 team members participate across the agency’s health centers and mobile points.
Separately, WHO General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said “Teams are on the ground and provides support to secure a quality campaign.”
UNRWA HEALTH TEAMS is one -third of the answer, consisting of 555 of the total 1,660 teams involved.
They will issue vaccinations in 10 of its health centers: one in Rafah, three each in Khan Younis and the middle area and one in Gaza City in the north. About 60 UNRWA Mobile Medical Points will also perform vaccinations.
The campaign is set to run through February 26.
