Pakistan Bar Council has approved the appointment of senior lawyer Ahsan Bhoon as a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) for a two -year period, Express News reported Wednesday.

The decision was made during a meeting held by the Supreme Court in Islamabad, led by Pakistan, Council President Mansoor Usman Awan.

The meeting attended central and provincial members of the council.

Bhoon was elected by a majority that secured 14 votes for, while four members were against his appointment. A member failed to vote.

Bhoon will represent Pakistan Bar Council in the Commission, playing a crucial role in legal appointments across the country.

Previously, Senior Supreme Court spokesman Akhtar Hussain withdrew from his position as a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), citing concern over controversy about judicial appointments.

Hussain, nominated three times by Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), presented his resignation to Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, who leads the commission.

In his letter, he expressed dissatisfaction with the recent selection process for the Supreme Court’s judges.

“In the current controversy with regard to legal appointments, I am not able to continue and hereby resign as a member of JCP,” he wrote, requesting the PBC to nominate a new representative in his place.

Despite pulling down, Hussain assured his continued support for judicial independence and democratic institutions.

Departure came shortly after JCP appointed six new judges to the Supreme Court, a step that triggered criticism from some legal and political circles.

Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) legislators and two senior Supreme Court judges died the process and raised questions about its transparency.
