- Integrated AI transcription and translation
- Register, transcript and summarize meetings
- VIAIM RECDOT is $ 236 now (so about £ 185 or AU $ 375), usually $ 249
Do you want an AI feature that is actually useful in your everyday life? Then Viim’s Recdot earlobe could be. When you are out and about, they are a normal set of hi-res wireless earplugs. But they have extra power: they can automatically detect, transcribe and translate meetings and other audio sources, generate meeting samples and task lists. You can also use them to record and transcribe phone calls.
You don’t necessarily have to carry them to use these features either. You can catch meetings on the knobs’ memory chip while in the case as well as in your ears as long as you leave the case open and push the red dot on it to start recording (which goes far towards explaining the name Recdot) and the pickup area is a promised 7 meters.
Recdot is one of three pairs of buds revealed by the company this week. There are two other models: Nano+, a more compact model and the air that uses ear hooks rather than an in-ear design. All three come with the AI features.
Not just an office experience
VIAIM RECDOT is marketed as a “smarter, more effective office experience”, but if the AI features are as good as claimed, these buds could be useful for a much wider group of people. Think students who register lectures; Singers that detect vocal harmonies; Authors conduct interviews.
I am currently in the latter category (though I also sing): I use desktop recording software for telephone interviews and a small wireless MIC system for personal conversations that feed the recordings in an AI transcription app that is almost as accurate and significantly faster than me. The prospect of a single device I can use for all that – and which I can also use to listen to pop music on the way to work – is very compelling.
VIAIM RECDOT comes with 36 hours of battery, 48DB Active noise reduction, an AI meeting assistant and a $ 249 price tag, currently reduced to $ 236.55 (so about £ 185 or AU $ 375, although accessibility and official pricing in these regions are not yet known) for an initial period.
