Manila: The Filipino Fire Brand Former President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on Tuesday at the request of the International Criminal Court (ICC), which marked a key development in the probe regarding thousands of alleged out -of -law murder in a bloody “war on drugs” defined his presidency.

“The war against drugs” was Duterte’s signature campaign policy that swept Maverick, crime-busting mayor of power in 2016 and delivered promises he gave under Vitriolic speeches to kill thousands of drug dealers.

Duterte, 79, has repeatedly defended the crash. He denies ordering the murders of drug competition and said he instructed police to only kill in self -defense.

However, the former president was preached to an Interpol -Arrestrordre by his arrival at Manila’s most important airport and was in custody, President Ferdinand Marcos JR said in a statement.

The arrest follows many years of Duterte who mocking the ICC as he unilaterally withdrew the Philippines from the basic treaty of the court in 2019 when it began to investigate claims of systematic outdoor killings on his guard.

Until last year, the Philippines had refused to cooperate with an investigation of alleged crimes against humanity by ICC, which says it has jurisdiction to investigate incidents while a country is a member.

In a video sent on Instagram by daughter Veronica Duterte from his detention at Manila’s Villamor Air Base, Duterte questioned the reason for his arrest.

“What is the law and what is the crime I committed?” he said in the video. It was unclear who he was talking to.

“I was brought did not hit by my own will, it’s someone else’s. You must now answer for detention.”

Slumland Deaths

According to police, 6,200 suspects were killed during drugs against drugs, as they say, ended up in shootouts. But activists say that the real toll of the crash was far greater, with thousands of Slumland -Material users, many of whom were included on official “surveillance lists”, killed under mysterious circumstances.

Police deny involvement in these killings and reject accusations of rights groups for systematic executions and cover-ups.

News sites earlier on Tuesday showed video footage of Duterte dressed in a jacket and striped polo shirt and randomly walk through a corridor at the airport as he returned from Hong Kong, accompanied by members of police criminal investigative and detection group and uniformed officers nearby.

Duterte’s allies and former legal adviser Salvador Panelo said the arrest was illegal and that police had denied the former president of the legal representation.

“The ICC arrest order comes from a false source, ICC, which has no jurisdiction over the Philippines,” Panelo said in a statement.

Human Rights Watch called the arrest “a critical step for accountability in the Philippines” and said the authorities should quickly transfer Duterte to ICC.

“His arrest could bring victims and their families closer to justice and send the clear message that no one is over the law,” a statement states.
