Hockey News: Whl players knocked unconscious during the match, led to the hospital

A junior hockey player was knocked unconscious during a match on Tuesday night, resulting in the game being suspended.

Tri-City Americans defender Terrell Goldsmith, 19, and Ashton Cumby from Seattle Thunderbirds fell the gloves just after a face-off at the beginning of the second period.

The couple exchanged strokes and Goldsmith’s helmet was beaten off. Shortly after his helmet was turned off, Cumby landed a hard stans that sent Goldsmith unconscious when he first fell face on the ice.

The American coaches ran on the ice, and Thunderbirds’ coach also left his respective bench to help tend to Goldsmith. The incident was so scary that cameras did not show goldsmith on the ice that was cared for by teachers. Teammates could clearly be seen that they called teachers.

Goldsmith became the stretcher of the ice and allegedly offered the amount a thumb before he was taken into an ambulance.

Americans sent to X on Wednesday morning with an update on Goldsmith.

“Terrell Goldsmith stays in the hospital this morning under observation. When he arrived at the hospital last night, he was awake, responsive and in a good mood. The tri-city Americans value the words of concern and support to Goldsmith. We will continue to update his status,” the statement reads.

After Goldsmith’s injury, the game was delayed and then suspended. Western Hockey League said the game “will be re -planned at a later date.”

Thunderbirds had a 2-0 lead at the time of the suspension.

“The decision to suspend yesterday’s WHL games between Seattle and Tri-City was not taken easily. After the incident on the ice, coaches and players from both clubs were heard with various officials on and off-ice in the building and from the WHL office,” the WHL declaration read.

“Overall, the decision was made to suspend the game of concern for well -being in Terrell Goldsmith as well as for the emotional state of players on both Thunderbirds and Americans.”

“The game will be re -planned at a later date, though these conversations have not yet taken place as we continue to prioritize Terrell’s well -being.”

The Americans published another update on Goldsmith to X on Thursday, thanking everyone for their support for Goldsmith and said he had been released from the hospital on Wednesday night and rest at home.

When the game resumes, Goldsmith would, if it’s capable of playing, and Cumby wouldn’t play in the rest of the game, as they both received fighting major and game conditions for a “staged match.”

Whl finds staged matches when the players release the gloves immediately after Faceoff and do not get involved in the play before the matches. Staged matches were banned in 2012.

Goldsmith was drafted by Arizona Coyotes, now Utah Hockey Club, in the fourth round of 2023 NHL draft. He signed a three-year-old entry-level contract with the team in October 2024.
