Karachi:
Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has recovered a wide range of mangrove forests from Squatters, which started a affecting effort to save the coastal ecosystem.
Over time, interventions began to cut down mangrove forests (locally known as Timar forests) to build housing units affecting the growth of the forest.
A spokesperson for KPT stated that mangrove forests are crucial to the marine environment. According to the agenda of the Prime Minister’s Task Force, the organization has recently removed illegal interventions from these occupied countries and regained them, planted Timar trees in a large area around Mai Kolachi Road.
KPT has also expressed its provision that a large number of these trees are planted during the plantation season. However, the responsibility for protecting the mangrove forest and preventing them from cutting remains a responsibility for Sindh Forest Department.
Until 1980, dense mangrove forests existed on eight species along the coast of Karachi. Over the past four decades, however, the federal and provincial institutions have allowed the occupation of two to three kilometers of the coastal country for the construction of expensive housing and commercial schemes. This despite the fact that Mangrover is protected forests under national and international laws and cannot be cut.
