When bad weather rolled into TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, during the final round on Sunday, McIlroy was placed three shots in front of Spaun and looked first -class to take Gold Trophy home.
But Spaun, a 34-year-old pro with a PGA Tour title, started a match, and the couple ended at 12-under 276, creating a tense three-hole playoffs on Monday.

The masters, Holded at Augusta National next month is the only major title that avoids McIlroy’s reach. Monday’s victory, however, marks the first time in his career that he has ever won two PGA Tour titles in a year for Augusta.
