The Trump administration is preparing to restructure the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and integrate blockchain technology into its purchasing system, Wired, citing a memo circulating among the state department.
The plan proposes to redirect the agency as US international humanitarian assistance and move it directly under authority by the Secretary of State, Wired. It would take advantage of a blockchain to track aid distributions and enforce payment models based on results rather than input.
“All distributions will also be secured and tracked via blockchain technology to radically increase security, transparency and traceability,” the memo says allegedly, adding that such an approach would encourage innovation and efficiency.
It is unclear whether blockchain would involve cryptocurrency or stableecoin use, or simply act as a digital headbok.
USAID has been under control of the Trump administration since the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk. DOGE has previously suggested the use of blockchain technology to increase efficiency. The president froze USAID payments in an executive order 20 January.
