- Nintendo Switch 2 will be launched on June 5
- Nintendo revealed GamesHare that allows users to play together on multiple consoles with a single cartridge
- This functionality was known as download — play at Nintendo DS and was interrupted with Wii U
Nintendo just revealed all Nintendo Switch 2 information we had been waiting to include a release date, price and showcase for Mario Kart World. Although this information may grab the headlines, there is another message that I am more excited about.
Nintendo just announced Gameshare, the spiritual sequel to DS Download Play, and I can’t believe we will return to the Gaming Storage time, where friends could hang out at Park Benches and play Multiplayer with only one game cartridge.
Download Play was a staple ad in Nintendo DS and 3DS and was later disconnected when Nintendo moved from Wii U to Nintendo Switch. Given how portable Nintendo switch is, it always felt like the console lacked a feature as a download game, but now Nintendo has fixed the conspicuous failure.
Gameshare gives several Nintendo Switch 2 owners the opportunity to play games like Mario Kart World in Local Multiplayer without having to own more than one copy. This is an excellent feature for children as they can play with all their friends without all handing out the price of a game.
If Gameshare is something like DS Download Play, everyone will be able to access the same experience with a cartridge so you can choose tracks, karts and grades without any restrictions.
The return of local multiplayer playing sharing may not seem like the flashest reveal from Nintendo Switch 2 directly, but it will come along when you least expect it.
Back to the glossy days
Now this may be my nostalgia talking, but Mario Kart DS is one of my favorite games of all time thanks to DS Download Play. Back when I had hair and no beard, I was a young kid who used to play lots of tennis at summer camp. During these summers, Mario Kart DS was the best time of day when I and my friends sat outside under the sun and ran with only one cartridge.
As a kid, you didn’t always get the latest games, and for multiplayer experiences that were often a problem. Nintendo DS completely fixed it so you can play competitively with others without asking your parents for more pocket money.
As a 30-year-old adult now, I think Gameshare will be just as useful. You can see many of these kids from tennis camps are now adults, and like back we still play multiplayer games.
So whether it rocks up to the Techradar office or meets a partner at the pub, Gameshare will allow us to play the best games that Nintendo Switch 2 has to offer without having to buy another copy.
