Openai has changed its plans and is set to put chatgpt-5 on wait while releasing new O3 and O4-MINI models in the next few weeks instead.
The news broke today in a Tweet By Openai CEO Sam Altman, where he revealed why the plans changed:
“There are a lot of reasons for this,” Altman wrote, “but the most exciting thing is that we will be able to make GPT-5 much better than we initially thought.
“We also found it harder than we thought it would be to smooth integrate everything, and we want to make sure we have enough capacity to support what we expect to be an unprecedented demand.”
The mention of ‘capacity to support an unprecedented demand’ is clearly a reference to the recent interruptions that Chatgpt has experienced as millions of new users signed up to try the new photo generation skills for chatgpt-4o.

The next development of AI
Chatgpt-5 is the next major development of the popular Chatgpt LLM and will be an important development in the future of AI.
The simpler name should also represent an adjustment change in Openais somewhat confusing product names conventions, which will soon contain both an O4 and a 4o model in line-up at the same time.
Instead of the user having to decide if they would use a smaller, lighter model, such as 4o-mini or a deeper reasoning model, like O4, for their tasks, Chatgpt-5 will decide for you what type of model you need, based on your query.
So far, Openai has confirmed that even users at the free level have some access to chatgpt-5 when it comes out, but users at Pro and Plus levels get more. The only word on a release date we’ve got before was “soon”.
Now it seems that we will have to wait a little longer for this integration of everything in a model, with Altman saying that chatgpt-5 would now appear “in a few months”.
Chatgpt-O3 improvements
In a comment on the new O3 model Altman also said that “we were able to really improve what we previously we previously to O3 in many ways; I think people will be happy …”
Answer to a user of X who asked if there would also be an O3 Pro model, gave Altman a one-word answer- “Coming!” – Which seems to confirm that a pro version of O3 is also in the works.
For when we will see the O3 and O4 mini models, Altman said, “In a few weeks and then do GPT-5 in a few months”.
