- X5 is an update of x4 with a larger sensor, better build quality and longer battery life
- We are still waiting for DJI’s rumor 360 camera plus GoPro Max 2
- Insta360 x5 The default version costs $ 549.99 / £ 519.99 / AU $ 929.99
Our favorite 360-degree camera with a long shot just got even better with a decent if iterative update.
The new Insta360 X5 comes a year after the X4, armed with improved image quality with low light and refined video states, plus very welcome design adjustments including fully interchangeable lenses-ours X5 first impressions are on the way soon.
X5 steals a march on DJI’s rumored 360-degree camera plus it yet to be announced GoPro Max 2, whose release has been stopped by GoPro for years.
It may not be a huge upgrade, but the X5 is better than the X4, where it means the most, and expands the insta360’s dominance in the 360 -Kamera Square – and it costs only a fraction more than X4 did at launch.
Insta360 x5 The standard version costs $ 549.99 / £ 519.99 / AU $ 929.99, while the essential bundle costs $ 659.99 / £ 609.99 / AU $ 1,109.99 and includes an additional battery, rapid charging case, 114 cm invisible selfie stick, default lens, lens cap and berries.
Let’s look at what’s new in 2025’s model.
X5’s updates will go far by improving the real world use
At the top of the X5 upgrades list is the brand new and larger Twin 1/1.28-inch sensors and triple ‘AI’ chips (versus twin chips in X4), which should deliver much better video quality video quality and we are all for these improvements.
X4’s smaller sensor and 8K resolution are pushed to their limits in every other scenario than optimal brightness, but the X5, complete with its Purevideo mode, seems to be a completely more versatile 360 camera.
Active HDR video in 5.7K resolution is now available up to 60 FPS, whereas the previous resolution and image speeds were more limited -and this is something we noticed in our X4 review.
The quality of the building has also been improved with harder, fully interchangeable lenses that are definitely a hit with demanding users. 360 cameras have bulbous twin lenses that are in danger of injury – but here they can be replaced in case of accidents.
We also get a magnetic mounting on the underside of the camera a la GoPro, making it easier and faster to move the camera between mounting.
Waterproofing has been increased to 49ft / 15m, plus there is a higher capacity battery in longer record times-now up to three hours in 5.7k, an increase of approx. 40% from x4. The X5’s battery can also be charged to 80% via USB-C in just 20 minutes.
A built-in wind protection with wind reduction mode improves the sound quality of the camera, while a new wireless microphone accessory is designed to easily pair with the X5 and make it a viable option as a vlogging camera-factual can X5 be your one-stop action and vlogging camera.
Of crucial importance, it seems that the editing process for 360-degree videos has been refined with new features and tools in the Insta360s app. These include the new Instaframe mode, which simultaneously detects a flat video with auto frame (including AI-Subject Detection skills) to keep your item in the middle of the video output action, without no need for editing, plus a 360-degree version of the video that can be stored as a backup for further edits if you wish. Statistics from Apple Watch and Garmin devices can also be transferred.
And the significant video files can be automatically backed up to the cloud using Insta360+ Cloud Service with basic 200 GB, Pro 1TB and Premium 2TYB subscription options -Prices are on the Insta360 website.
We believe that Insta360 has delivered some sensible updates over the X4 that should make the X5 the more versatile camera to shoot, edit and upload with. We will bring you our practical first impression soon, men-spoiler alarm if it wasn’t already obvious-is the X5 the new 360-degree camera to beat.
