Iran’s national infrastructure was affected by a “widespread and complex” cyberattack, which was repelled by the country’s cybersecurity experts, a senior official confirmed to the Islamic revolutionary Guard Corps-Bunded Tasnim news agency (via via The post).
Although the incident was not described in detail, said the leader of the Iranian government’s telecommunications infrastructure company (TIC), Behzad Akbari,;
“By the grace of God and the efforts of security and technical teams in Communications Infrastructure Company and the Ministry of Communication, one of the most widespread and complex cyber attacks against the country’s infrastructure was taken yesterday,” Akbari said at X (translated from Persian by Google).
Unconfirmed cause
There is very little known about the attack, nor about the Iran security team’s success in stopping it – Techradar Pro reached out to TIC, but has not yet received an answer.
This comes just a day after an explosion in the country’s largest port, Shahid Rajaei, who kills at least 28 people and hurts 800 more, the authorities report – although there is no indication that these two events are linked.
This is not the first time the Iranian national infrastructure has been attacked. By 2023, Iranian petrol stations were targeted in a controlled cyberattack that causes destruction across the country and affected about 70% of gas stations around the nation.
The Iranian government attributed this incident to a cyber group named ‘Predator Sparrow’, as it says has ties to Israel.
As geopolitical tensions rise, national infrastructure remains the top target of state -sponsored threat actors and cyber criminals, especially given the critical nature of the services they provide and the chaos created by downtime. The consequences for compromised telecommunications, transport, energy or water network can be serious or even life -threatening, so cyber security is more critical than ever.
