I don’t think I’ve ever reached the end of an edition of Strands and still not known what it was about, but that was definitely the case today with this collection of different types of railway car.
Of course, I googled it, but the train-day theme should really have tilted me off.
Boxcar is the best known of these railways, mainly because of its common use in films, where we have learned that they are incredibly easy to jump and turn off and usually contain some straw or stolen thieves.
They also have strong in Hobo mythology – both Real (Boxcar Willie) and imagined. In fact, there are several people called Boxcar in John Hodgman’s magnificent list of invented Hobo names (look it up if you have an extra moment) including Boxcar Ted, Boxcar Mick, Dr. Bill Stain-Chin, Boxcar Medic and Boxcar Jones, Boxcar Benjamin Disraeli.

What is new threads?
Strands is Nyt’s non-new-new-more word games after Wordle and connections. It is now a fully expanded member of Nyt’s Games Stable, which has been running for a year and can be played on the new Games website on desktop or mobile.
