I solved today’s new connections in the holy ‘reverse rainbow’ order, but it was hard to walk.
These creepy puzzles on new threw lots of red herring, with places to find paper money a particular problem. It all looked so easy early – I discovered ATM, cash register, tip jar and wallet right away. But I also had purse and bank and couldn’t decide which four of these six went together.
My idea was that they would be ‘places you can keep money’ – which means the bank would be in there but not tip jar or atm – or ‘places you can get money from’, which would mean to include bank and purse but not tip jar or cash register (unless you are of course a store assistant).
After two mistakes on the yellow group, I went ahead and solved the more difficult purple, blue and green groups, which means I was supposed to get it easiest by default. Maybe my brain just worked backwards today.
How did you do today? Tell me that in the comments below.
Yesterday’s new -connections Reply (Sunday 11 May, Game #700)

- Green: Avoid Dodge, duck, shake, skirt
- Blue: Common video game features Boss, health, level, power-up
- Purple: Mother ___ The earth, goose, may i, superior
What are new connections?
New Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four objects that share something in common, and each group has another level of difficulty: green is light, yellow a little harder, blue often quite hard and purple usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you do not have to technically solve the last one, as you can answer one by an elimination process. In addition, you can make up to four errors, giving you a little bit of breathing room.
However, it is a little more involved than something like Wordle, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to get up with tricks. For example, be careful on gay and other word games that can hide the answers.
It can be played free of charge via the new Games website on desktop or mobile.
