- Sony is considering raising the prices of its PS5 consoles again due to US customs rates
- Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao said in an investor’s questions and questions that the tariffs will have a 100 billion yen ($ 685 million) influence on Sony
- It was also said that Sony is considering producing consoles “local” in the US to avoid the rising tariffs
Sony has said it is considering raising its hardware prices again, including PlayStation 5, in the midst of the US customs.
Under the company’s investors’ questions and answers on May 14, 2025, after the release of its latest financial results, CFO Lin Tao shared that the recent increase in tariffs imposed by the Trump administration has already affected Sony and that tariffs will have a 100 billion yen ($ 685 million) if they remain like they are (via IGN).
Just last month, the Sony raised the award of PS5 Digital Edition in the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, which brought the console from £ 390/€ 450 to £ 430/€ 500.
Base PS5 and PS5 Pro did not receive a price increase at the time, but things could change as Sony suggests it will “pass on the price” of extra cost to its hardware.
“As for the tariff, we not only calculate the simple duty to come with 100 billion yen, but think of the currently available information and also look at the market trend, we may be able to pass on the price and also shipping allocation,” Tao said. “So we take different measures to be able to reach up to 100 billion yen -impact.”
Tao also said that Sony has three months of consoles stored in the United States and said, “It is not only China that there are other countries where it is produced and produced. As regards stock, the details change from day to day, but [there is an] Inventory of three months [for] distribution.”
As expected, Sony is considering passing along the Tarrf impact by increasing the price of their products. So it is assumed that the PS5 price could be affected. pic.twitter.com/a7nr1bz9rvMay 14, 2025
Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki also said the company is considering producing consoles “local” in the United States to avoid the rising tariffs.
“Of course, these hardware can be produced locally,” Totoki said. “I think it would be an effective strategy. But PS5 is manufactured in many areas. Whether it will be manufactured in the US or not, it must be considered in the future. We are not in such a critical situation.”
There is no official notice of a price increase yet, but we will keep you up to date. But now it would be the best time to get your hands on a PS5 or PS5 PRO before the consoles become potentially more expensive once again.
