- Samsung has launched a new game monitor, Odyssey OLED G6
- The monitor is the first 500Hz oled option on the market
- It will be available in other regions later in the year
Samsung’s Odyssey setup includes some of the best game monitors available on the market, many of which are OLEDs for immersive experiences – and it has just added another to the list.
As reported by Videocardz, Samsung has launched the world’s first 500Hz oled gaming monitor; Odyssey OLED G60SF, which boasts an incredibly high 500Hz update speed and a 27-inch screen at the 2,560 x 1,440 resolution.
Videocardz states that it will be priced at $ 1,488 (about £ 1,120 / AU $ 2,320). It is currently only available in some countries in Asia, but is expected to roll out to other regions later in the year.
Odyssey OLED G60SD is the current available model, but instead uses a 360Hz update speed. The new OLED G60SF pushes this up to 500Hz, while also offering a VESA Displayhdr True Black 500 screen with top of 1000 nits – one step up from the G60SD 250 nits of brightness.
It is worth noting that Samsung recently announced that it is planning to introduce cheaper OLED screens, but that is not the case with the new OLED G6. This is a screen to appeal to first-person shooter players, especially games like Counter-Strike – But apart from using tools like Nvidia’s framework generation, there are very few games that can reach image speeds up to 500 FPS (or honestly, games that don’t need), even with the best available PC hardware.
I keep myself with normal update speeds please …
Although there is no harm in providing a high 500Hz update frequency, especially for browsing and games that are able to reach super high image speeds, the price of $ 1,488 said. After using a handful of screens with different update speeds over the years I can assure you you don’t need A 500Hz screen.
With my alienware AW3423DWF OLED Monitor, 165Hz is just fine and is the sweet place for advanced game; Some may even claim that 144Hz or 120Hz is more than enough. That’s because the difference between them is not significant enough for you to notice – unless you jump to one of them directly from a 60Hz screen.
The most impressive feature with the new Odyssey OLED G6 is actually the VESA certification as Displayhr True Black 500 and 1,000 nits of pointed brightness will revive your gaming experience if you upgrade from a LED screen.
However, there are many cheaper options for OLEDs on the market that can do the same, but just without the absurd high update rates. Call me crazy but I can’t see the value of a 500Hz update speed monitor for games …
