- Project Starline launched in 2021 and is now Google Beam
- It rolls out this year and add 3D to video call
- There is also a real -time translation component of the technique
You may have already seen Google’s Project Starline Tech, which is reimaginated video call in full 3D. It was only teased over four years ago, and on Google I/O 2025 we got the news that it is being rolled out fully with a new name: Google Beam.
Since its inception, the idea of Google Beam has been to make it feel like you’re in the same room as someone when you’re on a video call with them. Instead of wearing headsets or glasses, however, it depends on cameras, mics and AI technology.

“The combination of our AI video model and our lightweight field display creates a deep sense of dimensionality and depth,” Google says. “It’s this that allows you to make eye contact, read subtle signals and build up understanding and trust as if you were face to face.”
Beam participants have to sit in a tailor-made condition with a large, curved screen capable of generating a partially three-dimensional reproduction of the person they are talking to. The first business customers will be equipped from HP later in the year.
Translation in real time
There is another element of Google Beam that has been announced today and it is real -time translation. As you would expect, this is driven by AI technology and makes it easier to talk to another in another language.
According to the demo that Google has shown, the translation is only a second or two behind the speech, and it works in the same way as a translation can be added afterwards on top of someone speaking in a video recording.
It is another impressive part of the Google Beam experience and provides another benefit to organizations with teams and clients around the world. According to Google, it can preserve voice, tone and expression while changing the language the sound is spoken in.
However, this part of the experience will not only be available in Google Beam: It is now rolling out inside Google Meet Now for consumers, even if you need either Google Ai Pro or Google AI Ultra plan to access it.
