- Peter Green Chilled told his clients that it was suffering a ransomware -attack
- It stopped temporarily delivering goods
- Markets feel the brooding of the attack
Peter Green Chilled, a British logistics company that distributes refrigerated and frozen food to British supermarkets, recently suffered a ransomware attack that caused serious problems throughout the supply chain.
According to several media reports, the company sent its customers on May 15 to notify them of the cyber security incident that took place the day before. The BBC, referring to the company’s CEO, Tom Binks, said the transport activities were operational but new orders were not processed.
No further details were given about the attack itself. Therefore, we do not know who the striker is, how they managed to infiltrate Peter Green Chilled’s IT infrastructure or how much they require in ransom.
How the attack affects supermarkets
We also do not know if attackers stole any sensitive files, as is usual in ransomware attacks. The company is not responding to media queries at the moment, it seems.
Peter Green Chilled is not the largest organization in his industry, but it still plays an important role as it delivers large British supermarkets, including Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Aldi. It also serves Co-Op and M&S, which currently addresses their own cyberattacks.
The attack on Peter Green cooled sent ripples throughout the industry. When he spoke on a morning radio program, the founder of the Black Farmer Food brand explained how Peter Green, who did not deliver the goods, is likely to cost the company about $ 133,000 a week. And it’s only a business in a week’s work.
Cyber criminals love to target critical infrastructure providers as the pressure is huge and forces organizations to pay the demand to keep the business going. For Jamie Moles, Senior Technical Manager at NDR provider Extrahop, cyber security in retail and logistics must be treated with the same severity as it is treated in critical infrastructure.
“CyberSecurity in Retail and Supply Chain Logistics must be treated with the same difficulty as critical infrastructure,” he told Techradar Pro in an E -mail declaration. “Protecting digital systems is no longer optional, and modernization of how organizations can look into their networks will improve the resilience to threats such as ransomware, ensure continuity and confidence in the systems we all trust every day.”
