FIFA doubles on web3 ambitions by building its own avalanche-driven blockchain

FIFA, Football’s global governing body, plans to use Avalanche’s network to operate its own dedicated LAG-1 blockchain.

FIFA Blockchain is an avalanche L1, a customizable blockchain that uses Avalanche’s technology (also known as a subnet). The news comes when Avalanche Network recently underwent its large Avalanche9000 upgrade, aiming to attract new developers and encourage them to create customized L1s.

Thursday’s message is not FIFA’s first step into the blockchain and crypto world. By 2022, the football organ released a non-fun token (NFT) collection on the Algorand Blockchain in front of the Qatar world championship. FIFA also teased this change in April and noticed that it would move its collection to an EVM compatible blockchain while continuing to pursue web3 initiatives.

NFT -Dille, which saw large institutions and businesses jumping into the trend, has now mostly disappeared after the brutal crypto -winter that dampened the mood of the industry for several painful years. However, a large unit such as FIFA’s continued focus on blockchain probably signals that the use case for the technology has not died and large companies are still looking to dab in the industry.

“Avalanche is designed for companies and organizations that want to build custom, high-performance blockchain solutions,” said John Nahas, chief business officer at Ava Labs, in a press release shared with Coindesk. “FIFA’s decision to launch its L1 on Avalanche is a testimony to our technology’s ability to support global scale applications with speed, flexibility and security.”

While FIFA currently only has a World Cup’s NFT collection and a digital marketplace, it did not share what else it plans to release on its new blockchain.
