The sports world was left stunned on Sunday night when the family of John Brenkus, the host of “Sport Science,” who was seen under ESPN segments, announced his death on social media.
Brenkus was 54.

A statement sent on his side on social media said Brenkus “lost his fight” with depression at the end of the month.
“It is with deep sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus was dead,” the statement reads. “John, co-founder of Base Productions, founder of Brinx.tv, and co-creator and host of the 6-time Emmy Award-winning ‘Sport Science’, had fought for depression.
“John lost his fight with this horrible illness on May 31, 2025. His heart -bred family and friends request privacy at this time and encourage anyone who struggles with depression to seek help.”

Brenku’s death resonated across social media.
Brenkus had been open about his struggle with his mental health problems. He spoke with former NFL star Marcellus Wiley about his downward spiral after selling “Sport Science” to ESPN.
The “Sport Science” segments became a big hit under ESPN’s “Sports Center” in the late 2000s and mid -2010s. The segment showed the effect on the bodies of the athletes from huge hits and other cases during games.
