Punjab ends new local government draft

Lahore:

The Punjab government has completed the draft of a new local government system, party sources confirmed on Wednesday, with the proposed local government law 2025, which is expected to be adopted in the provincial assembly after the budget.

According to Party Insiders, the new system will eliminate direct elections for Union Council chairmen and vice -chairmen. Instead, selected councilors choose the best representatives.

In addition, the method of choosing Rådmann is also revised at the departmental level. According to the new mechanism, the council men will contest elections across the Union Council rather than individual departments.

Party sources also revealed that, unlike the previous model, financial and administrative powers will now be rejected for tehsil council instead of district council.

As part of the upcoming fiscal plan, the Punjab government has earmarked RS5 billion specifically to implement the election of local government. In the first phase, the assembly will approve the budget, followed by the passage of the new local government law 2025.

Meanwhile, when talking to journalists in Lahore, Punjab minister said local government Zeeshan Rafique that the legislative process on the new law was expected to be completed in July.
